This inscription is on the back of the card, but Service no. does not cross reference with any 'Alex'
The serial number belongs to Alcock, Keith; Army Number - 28117; Date of birth - 01 February 1920 I would be thinking that it was a photo of himself taken in Alexandria Eygpt. That is a common way of identifying a location by a serviceman. Bob

Sailor, HMAS "Cerberus": "Yours truly Stan 14.11.17" in bottom R corner.
Dave had a friend called Stan Ridley, from Campbells Creek, who served in the war. I've always assumed that Stan was in the AIF, but he's not in the rolls etc - so perhaps he was in the navy. Stan was married in 1922 and died in 1963, so clearly he got back from the war.
